"Service is suspended east of Patchogue on the Montauk Branch after a train due in Montauk at 4:09 a.m. sideswiped a non-revenue train east of Speonk as part of a passing maneuver," the LIRR said in a statement. "Customers are advised to use alternate branches or other means of transportation."

The closure is expected to last throughout the day, the LIRR said.

"We expect service east of Patchogue, including to the Hamptons and Montauk to be suspended all day - customers should not go to Penn Station, Atlantic Terminal, Jamaica or their local station expecting service to resume east of Patchogue," the LIRR said.
